FieldWriter is a clean, minimal writing app with AI assistance. Write naturally. Get help when you need it. Your work stays on your device.

Getting Started

• Click the editor area and start writing
• Your work saves automatically
• Click FieldWriter in the top bar to manage files and folders

AI Assistant

• Click the ✦ icon to open the AI panel
• Type a question or instruction and press Send
• Plan mode: AI suggests changes, you review and accept/reject
• Active mode: AI applies changes directly
• You need an API key to use AI features (see Settings)

Setting Up AI

1. Open Settings (in the sidebar)
2. Choose your AI provider (OpenRouter, Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google)
3. Paste your API key
4. Select a model

Don't have a key? Sign up at openrouter.ai — they have free models to try.

Context Documents

• Add reference material for the AI using the Context panel
• Upload files, paste text, or add URLs
• The AI will reference these when helping you

Keyboard Shortcuts

• F11 — Toggle fullscreen
• Ctrl+J — Toggle AI assistant panel
• Ctrl+\ — Toggle file menu (sidebar)
• Ctrl+K / Cmd+K — Command palette
• Ctrl+S — Force save
• Ctrl+B — Bold
• Ctrl+I — Italic
• Ctrl+U — Underline
• Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y — Undo / Redo

Export

• Click Export in the sidebar
• Available formats: TXT, Markdown, HTML, RTF, Print/PDF
• ZIP Backup: Export all files and settings as a backup

Themes

• Open Settings > Themes
• 10 themes: 5 standard + 5 minimal (borderless)
• FieldWriter theme (paper + navy ink) is the default

Privacy

• All your writing is stored locally in your browser
• API keys are encrypted and stored locally
• We never see your content
